It happens over and over again, and it seems we never learn. Human sees dog, human thinks dog is cute, human buys dog, human realizes raising an animal takes time and money, and thus, human abandons dog.

The cycle continues, and each year 6.5 million companion animals are abandoned at shelters each year. People often say that their pets are family but when times get hard, they are quick to forget those very words. If a family member is sick or hurt, you take them to the doctor. If you move, you take them with you. If you have a baby, you make extra room. This is the same way your dog should be cared for.

A dog or any pet is a lifelong commitment that shouldn’t be at risk of being discarded or cast aside. While relinquishing a dog at the shelter may be heartbreaking for the caretaker, it’s only temporary. For the animal, however, it can be a long, confusing, and scary road ahead – and for far too many, that road ends in death.

One such dog who experienced the anguish of being abandoned is a 10-year old Yorkie named Tatum. Luckily, Saving K-9 Lives is caring for this sweet boy and searching for his forever home where he can feel loved and safe the rest of his life.

The shelter shared Tatum’s story with a heartbreaking narration.

If we want to make a difference for animals like Tatum we have to change people’s mindset that animals are disposable. By making people aware of the resources available to them and their companion animals, fewer pets will be given up, and in turn, fewer euthanizations. There are a plethora of resources from pet food banks to assistance with veterinary costs. However, while these programs are wonderful options during hard times, many situations resulting in giving up pets can easily be prevented by simply doing your due diligence before adopting. Check out these tips on what you can do instead of giving up your pet aka family member.

  1. Animals are though of as possessions which is why the people are called owners. They are not objects but living and feeling beings. I think the entertainment industry has a role intros that caters to the self centeredness and stupidity of people. If there is a dog in a show or movies (Eddy in Frasier, Pongo in 101 Dalmatians to name two) they have to go out and get those dogs and some of them are not easy dogs. all dogs require care of course but these fools never research but just buy them like they are a new hat. this guy reminds me of my Timmy who was a Yorkie who was also around 10. Fortunately he was not abandoned but lived with neighbor who was old and went into a nursing home. She was a cantankerous old woman and he was a cantankerous old man. I loved hi \’til the end. What the solution to this problem is a tough one. Breeders will let anyone buy a dog without knowing anything about the people along with others who just don\’t care including pet stores who care even less. I wish I could take Tatum but I am at my limit right now. I am glad he is safe though.

  2. Exactly. People need to realize that animals are living breathing feeling just like us, not to be thrown away because of inconvenience. They are forever children to be cared for, loved, and protected.
