Growing Outrage Over Horse Welfare in Equestrian Sports

The ethical concerns surrounding equestrian sports have intensified following recent controversies at the Paris Olympics. Two prominent riders have faced significant disciplinary actions, igniting a surge of public criticism and calls for reform.

Charlotte Dujardin, one of Great Britain’s top Olympians, has withdrawn from the Games and received a provisional suspension by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI). This follows the release of a video showing Dujardin repeatedly hitting a horse with a whip during a training session. The footage, aired on Good Morning Britain, led to widespread condemnation and resulted in animal charity Brooke severing ties with Dujardin. Despite her apology and explanation that the incident was a lapse in judgment, the controversy has persisted.

Shortly after Dujardin’s suspension, Brazilian rider Carlos Parro was issued a yellow warning card by the FEI for causing “unnecessary discomfort” to his horse, Safira, through a technique known as “Rollkur,” which is known to harm horses’ breathing. This incident, combined with previous cases of abuse, has heightened scrutiny of the sport.

The backlash has prompted nearly 30,000 signatures on a petition demanding the removal of horse-related disciplines from the Olympics. This movement is supported by organizations like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which has long advocated against practices in horse racing and other equestrian events.

With horses being removed from the modern pentathlon starting in 2028, the debate over animal welfare in equestrian sports continues to gain momentum. As Lisa Lazarus of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority emphasizes, the sport’s future hinges on prioritizing the well-being of horses and demonstrating a commitment to their care.
