In the fight against climate change, various sectors are innovating to cut down carbon emissions. Among these, the cement industry stands out with its significant contribution to global carbon dioxide emissions, even surpassing those from aviation. One company, however, is making headway with a game-changing solution.

Oakland-based company Brimstone has developed an eco-friendly alternative to traditional cement, notorious for its carbon-intensive production process. Brimstone’s green cement, a groundbreaking development, has recently received a key certification, confirming it matches the structural and chemical properties of regular cement. This certification marks a crucial step forward, as the primary challenge for green cement has been gaining the construction industry’s trust.

Traditional cement, primarily Portland cement, involves heating limestone to extremely high temperatures, releasing significant amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. The process, both energy-intensive and environmentally harmful, has made cement production one of the most carbon-emitting industries.

Brimstone’s team has innovated a different method. Instead of limestone, their process begins with carbon-free silicate rock. This unique approach not only avoids CO2 release but even generates a byproduct, magnesium, which absorbs atmospheric CO2, resulting in a carbon-negative cement.

Yet, breaking into an industry dominated by tried-and-tested materials is no small feat. The construction sector, inherently risk-averse due to the high stakes involved, has relied on Portland cement since the 18th century. This centuries-old trust places a high entry barrier for new, eco-friendly alternatives.

Brimstone partnered with Twining Consulting, an engineering firm, to undergo rigorous testing of its green cement. The positive result is a significant win, as Brimstone’s product meets ASTM C150, a widely used standard in the industry.

While Brimstone has miles to go before its cement hits the market, the green thumbs-up from Twining Consulting signals a promising future. With approximately $60 million in funding, including Support from Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund and the Bill Gates-founded Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the company plans to construct a pilot plant near Reno, Nevada.

Brimstone’s innovative approach offers hope for reducing the carbon footprint of the construction industry. As the quest for eco-friendly alternatives gains momentum, Brimstone’s breakthrough highlights the critical role of innovation and validation in addressing Climate change.
