suburbs

Suburbs have long been associated with sprawling landscapes, high carbon footprints, and wasteful land use. But with a radical approach to planning, we can turn these areas into affordable, livable, and climate-friendly spaces.

In the US, suburbs are often the physical embodiment of social stratification and unequal distribution of wealth and opportunity. They are environmentally unsustainable and contribute to long commute times, high infrastructure costs, traffic congestion, and social isolation. Suburban sprawl also exacerbates housing crises by occupying precious land that could be used for walkable, mixed-use, diverse, and affordable cities.

However, suburbs can be redeemed. Researchers at cityLAB, an urban-design research center at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), have been working on solutions to transform southern California’s suburban sprawl. Their work focuses on reevaluating zoning regulations and parking requirements, which are significant obstacles in creating sustainable and affordable living spaces.

By implementing new policies like the Accessory Dwelling Unit law, doubling the density in many suburbs becomes possible, leading to increased housing opportunities. Additionally, addressing parking requirements can reduce construction costs and promote sustainable transportation alternatives. Mixed-use projects and higher-density housing are also growing in popularity across the US.

However, simply increasing density does not guarantee affordability and equity. To ensure inclusive communities, creative solutions like building housing for teachers and staff on underused school land or setting up loan funds for affordable rental houses can be implemented.

To further transform suburbs into sustainable spaces, planners should consider integrating public amenities like shaded bus stops, solar power, water-permeable surfaces, and shared parking areas. These changes can contribute to healthier, more inclusive neighborhoods.

It’s time for us to take action and rethink the way our suburbs are designed. We can turn these areas into sustainable, livable communities that benefit both people and the planet. Let’s Support policies and initiatives that promote innovative, inclusive, and eco-friendly solutions to suburban sprawl. Together, we can create a better future for everyone.
