The organization Global Citizen is best known for the music festival they put on. Their mission is to engage young people all around the world to take action in an effort to end poverty. Their goal is to end poverty by 2030. Just this weekend on Saturday, September 28th the festival was attended by more than 60,000 people in Central Park. There were performances from artists like Queen + Adam Lambert, Alicia Keys, Pharrell Williams, and OneRepublic.

The festival is a great opportunity for artists to speak up on the causes they are passionate about and encourage those in attendance to take action. Environmental activist and actor Leonardo DiCaprio gave a passionate speech about Climate change. Adam Lambert spoke up about plastic pollution saying, “We’re asking fans to take action to ask certain governments around the world… to take part in helping take care of our oceans. Fish and wildlife in the ocean are literally gagging on pieces of plastic and it’s killing them.”

Following the climate strikes and just ahead of the festival, Global Citizen announced an amazing initiative. They are pledging $350 billion to fight poverty and Climate change. According to Newsweek, they have “lofty plans to partner with thousands of CEOs, philanthropists and organizations in an attempt to raise the money before October 2020.” It will all culminate in a 10-hour long live streamed concert with participation from the following artists: “Alicia Keys, Billie Eilish, Coldplay, Cyndi Lauper, Lizzo, Metallica, Miley Cyrus, Muse, Ozzy Osbourne, Pharrell Williams, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Shawn Mendes.”

So far, Cisco, Delta Air Lines, Johnson & Johnson, P&G, Verizon and other companies have already signed on to contribute money. Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans said they will keep companies accountable and not allow people to back out of their pledges. They’re also partnering with the United Nations and Teneo to get companies and billionaires to contribute.

It’s smart to hold billionaires and companies responsible to contribute and do their part. Recently, Amazon employees have actually been asking their employers to take action and do more. Citizens can march, speak up, and mobilize but billionaire companies actually have the means to make things happen.
