A growing wave of young investors is reshaping the future of finance—and it’s all about sustainability. According to a new Morgan Stanley survey reported by Mark Segal for ESG Today, 80% of Gen Z and Millennial investors plan to increase their allocations to sustainable investments this year.

Despite ongoing political backlash around ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) issues, enthusiasm hasn’t wavered. In fact, interest in sustainable investing is now stronger than ever. Globally, 88% of investors expressed interest, and nearly 70% of younger investors said they’re “very interested” in aligning their portfolios with environmental or social good. That’s not just talk—68% of Gen Z and 65% of Millennials already hold more than 20% of their investments in sustainability-focused assets.

The motivation? It’s not just ethics. The top reason investors gave was confidence in performance—most believe sustainable options offer solid financial returns. A huge 85% of respondents said they don’t think there’s a trade-off between sustainability and making money.

Still, challenges remain. Greenwashing and lack of transparency top the list of barriers. But younger generations are also more likely to seek advisors and platforms that help them navigate sustainable investing. And when choosing companies to back, they’re prioritizing climate action, human rights, and even carbon offset strategies.

This momentum suggests that as Gen Z and Millennials gain more financial power, their values will shape investment trends—making sustainable investing the norm rather than the niche.

Let’s take this as a sign: if you’re not already putting your money where your values are, now’s the time. Whether you’re vegan, climate-conscious, or just tired of business as usual, investing sustainably is one of the most impactful steps you can take. It’s not just good for the planet—it’s smart for your future.
