Abuse can come in many forms, and this post is proof that a little love and attention to animals’ basic needs can make a huge impact.

Meet Ellen, before she was rescued. Due to her abuse, she suffered from being covered in urine-soaked, matted fur.

When the Trio Animal Foundation picked up Ellen from an open access shelter, they couldn’t tell if this dog was male or female, or which end was her face and which was her behind.

Sue brought her home for a clean-up. Ellen’s fur was so matted and gnarly that the heavy fur on her front legs had already started to rip out by the root.

A kindhearted veteran groomer from Mutt Hutt, named Kelli, agreed to help.

“Without Kelli’s generous offer, I am not sure what we would have done,” Sue wrote. “The amount of grooming tools that she had to use to break through the hard shell of fur was unbelievable.”

She started to look more like a dog after some shaving!

Ellen was very grateful for her rescuers and to finally be shed of her abuse.

“When it came time to shave the matted fur that had tightly wrapped its way around Ellen’s raw legs like a snug boot, Ellen actually looked up at me and started to give me kisses,” Sue said. “Even better, the first time that she could feel the touch of my hand on her newly shaven back… she looked me in the eyes and it was as if she was saying thank you… her past abuse was literally being shaved away. In fact, 2 POUNDS of fur was shaved away!”

Then, Ellen was given a bath. Lookin’ good!

Not done yet! Ellen needed one final trim.

After her bath and trim, Sue bought Ellen a new collar, harness, leash and a few toys. From there, they went to the vet for vaccinations. She even got to interact with some other dogs. After a long day, Ellen snuggled up in a blanket.

If you are interested in adopting Ellen, who is 8.5 pounds and around 2-years-old, please fill out an adoption application at www.projectrescuechicago.org. Once Ellen receives a clean bill of health from TAF’s vet, she will be spayed and ready for her new home.
