Want to avoid dementia? You might need to start adding these colorful foods to your diet as a preventative measure.

US News recently reported on a study that looked at foods that can help to avoid and prevent dementia. The study was centered around a naturally occurring compound in food called flavonoids. This compound was shown to decrease mental decline by 20%. In people who consumed only half a serving of flavonoid-rich foods.

Study co-author Dr. Tian-Shin Yeh, a research fellow at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health said, “We think it may have important public health implications. Because based on what you’re seeing in the current study. It could be that just by making some simple changes to your diet, that is, by adding these flavonoid-rich foods into your diet. You could potentially help prevent cognitive decline.”

This study can prove to be medically groundbreaking since there is such a large absence of treatments for dementia patients. With such few effective forms of treatment, the best way to treat dementia is to prevent it before it can happen.

The onset of dementia can be delayed and even prevented by a combination of diet, exercise, and lifestyle factors. Including flavonoid-rich foods is an easy dietary change that can have amazing long-term effects of avoiding dementia.

Many fruits and vegetables are rich in flavonoids, such as bananas, apples, berries, celery, sweet peppers, and citrus fruits are just a few options.

Another type of flavonoid called anthocyanins was found to reduce cognitive decline by 24%. This flavonoid is found in darker fruits, such as cherries, blackberries, and blueberries.

There is still little known about why these flavonoids help to prevent cognitive decline. Research has proven that a colorful diet is healthier, which is why it is recommended that everyone eat a diet rich in colors and flavonoids. It is never too late to start thinking about your brain health.
