In a tragic event, a young foal fell to its death after a group of amateur photographers got too close trying to take selfies. The foal panicked and went over the cliffs at Rhossili in Wales. The National Coastwatch Institute at Worm’s Head, near where the event took place, asks visitors to the popular site to please keep their distance from the ponies and use the zoom feature on their phones and cameras to capture images instead. Doing so helps ensure the safety of both the ponies and visitors.

A local farmer, Nicky Beynon, and his family help care for the ponies. According to a statement Beynon made to the BBC, the foal’s death occurred in April shortly after it was born. As it was struggling to learn to walk, a group of people approached the foal and its mother forcing them close to the cliff’s edge. Panicked, the foal managed to get to its feet and fell over the edge of the cliff. The mare was extremely distraught at the loss of her foal.
This is not the first time that people seeking to capture images have disrupted the ponies. In a 2022 incident, a man flew a drone closely above one pony causing her distress and confusion. Additionally, one woman was injured after a pony kicked her. Although she received first aid, her injury caused her difficulty walking. The NCI Worm’s Head also reports having to stop and ask people to leave the animals alone nearly every day.
In light of these events, the National Trust Cymru has asked that people observe the Countryside Code. This code lays out guidelines for enjoying public spaces. It asks that people keep their distance from wildlife and livestock, refrain from feeding animals, follow posted signs and instructions on gates, and keep dogs leashed. Following these guidelines helps protect livestock, wildlife, companion animals, and humans.
