Colon cancer is no longer an older person problem. More people under 50 are getting diagnosed, and that should make all of us pay attention. According to Futura Team, colorectal surgeon Dr. Karen Zaghiyan shared five habits she tries to avoid to lower her risk.

Processed meats like bacon, pepperoni, and deli slices are at the top of her list. Charred meat from open flames is another concern, because high heat creates chemicals that can harm cells. If you grill, keep the heat lower, flip often, and cut away any blackened bits. Better yet, roast, simmer, or bake more often.

She also cautions against using antibiotics for minor illnesses when they are not needed, since gut bacteria can take time to recover. Ultra processed foods matter too, because they often deliver lots of calories with little fiber. A recent paper in JAMA Oncology linked higher ultra processed food intake with higher odds of early onset colorectal cancer precursors among women under 50 (study). Finally, she flags daily alcohol based mouthwash as a habit worth reconsidering, and suggests alcohol free options if you use it often.

The good news is that many of the simplest swaps are also better for the climate. Choosing more plant based meals built around beans, lentils, vegetables, and whole grains supports the gut and overall health. It also helps the Earth by lowering the footprint of what we eat, which is good for the environment. It can also reduce harm to animals.

If you notice blood in stool, persistent bowel changes, ongoing belly pain, or unexplained fatigue, talk to a clinician. And if you want to start today, add one more vegan meal this week and share it with someone you love.
