According to People, Texas professor and mom of three Kelly Mann began battling what she thought was a stubborn case of pink eye—only to discover months later it was an early warning sign of breast cancer. Mann experienced recurring eye inflammation in spring 2023 that antibiotics couldn’t fix. It wasn’t until she found a lump in her arm that she realized something more serious was happening.
Doctors soon confirmed stage 2 breast cancer, a diagnosis that came just before her 36th birthday. Mann later learned her recurring eye condition wasn’t typical pink eye at all, but episcleritis, an inflammation of the tissue covering the white of the eye that can be linked to internal diseases. “Your eye, being an organ, will respond in unique ways to things happening in your body,” she said, describing how the body often sends subtle signals before traditional tests detect illness.
Her story highlights how environmental and lifestyle factors can shape our health in complex ways. Many studies show that a diet rich in plant-based foods may help reduce the risk of several cancers, including breast cancer, by lowering inflammation and supporting a healthy immune system. Preventive care—through diet, exercise, and regular screenings—can help catch diseases earlier and improve recovery outcomes.
Mann has since undergone chemotherapy, surgery, and reconstruction. Today, she uses her social media presence to spread awareness about early detection and the importance of listening to the body’s signals. Her strength and openness are inspiring others to take charge of their own health and embrace more holistic, sustainable lifestyles that nurture both people and the planet.
Choosing to care for your body and the Earth through mindful, vegan or plant-based habits can make a real difference—for your health and for the environment we share.
