This TikTok user warns his viewers not to drink bottled water until they watch this video. @theholistichusband explains that many popular brands of plastic water bottles, especially carbonated water, can contain a toxic chemical known as PFAS.
Also known as “forever chemicals,” PFAS are a family of potentially thousands of synthetic chemicals that are extremely persistent in the environment and our bodies, according to CNN. In other words, these manmade chemicals don’t break down in the environment or our bodies and accumulate over time. @theholistichusband references an article from the EPA, which states that over time, PFOA and PFOS can cause reproductive and development, liver and kidney, and immunological effects in laboratory animals.
In reference to a 2020 study by Consumer Reports, @theholistichusband told his viewers that Perrier (1.1 ppt), La Croix (1.16 ppt), Canada Dry (1.24 ppt), Poland Spring (1.66 ppt), Bubly (2.24 ppt), Polar (6.41 ppt), and Topo Chico (9.76 ppt) are popular sparkling water brands known to have high PFAS levels. He also said that Deer Park and Tourmaline Spring are still water brands known to have high PFAS levels. Currently, no federal regulation exists for PFA standards in the industry, but some states have put limitations in place.
While this news may be disappointing to some people, there are plenty of good replacement beverages to choose from that could be better for your health and the environment. CBS News reported that Spindrift, San Pellegrino, Sparkling Ice, and Schweppes all have PFA levels below 1 ppt that you can enjoy!
