Dolce & Gabbana’s New Scent for Dogs Sparks Debate

Dolce & Gabbana has launched a luxurious perfume mist for dogs. Priced at €99 ($103), this fragrance promises to envelop pets in “warm notes” of ylang-ylang, musk, and sandalwood. The opulent product even features a 24-carat gold-plated paw on the bottle and comes with an exclusive Dolce & Gabbana dog collar and tag.

The brand’s campaign highlights words like “unconditional love,” “loyal,” and “playful,” showcasing finely groomed dogs such as a dachshund, chihuahua, and bichon frisé in its advertisement. The campaign suggests that these pets embody qualities like delicacy, authenticity, and charisma, with a tagline proclaiming, “Cause I’m not just a dog, I’m Fefé.”

However, the RSPCA has raised concerns about the impact of such fragrances on dogs. Alice Potter, a senior scientific officer at the RSPCA, cautions against using strong-scented products on pets. She emphasizes that dogs rely heavily on their sense of smell to navigate their environment and communicate. According to Potter, fragrances could interfere with these essential behaviors and might be unpleasant for the animals.

Despite the controversy, Stefano Gabbana, co-founder of Dolce & Gabbana, remains optimistic. He announced that Fefé, named after co-founder Domenico Dolce’s dog, is already being distributed across Europe and the US, with plans to expand further based on the enthusiastic market response.

The pet care industry is experiencing significant growth, with the global market expected to reach $500 billion by 2030. This trend suggests that consumers are increasingly willing to invest in premium products for their pets. Historical examples include Harrods’ 2007 launch of Sexy Beast perfume for dogs and the British retailer Space NK’s dog spray with “crisp top notes,” among others.
