There’s no doubt that life on the streets is hard for dogs. But sometimes, life in a shelter can be just as stressful of an experience. Bixby, the dog in this video, is a five-year-old Basset Hound who was recently brought into Carson Animal Care Center. You can see from the look in his eyes, that he is utterly terrified of the new sounds that surround him in the shelter.

According to the Facebook page, Saving Carson Shelter Dogs, he has just a few more days for his family to claim him before he is put up for adoption. Sadly, Carson Animal Care Center is a kill shelter and once their available for adoption date comes, the clock starts ticking. If a dog isn’t adopted within a certain timeframe, they are slotted for the euthanasia list.

This means time is running out for sweet Bixby. Unfortunately, Bixby is only one of the many dogs in the U.S. who are facing the same fate. This pup is a reminder of just how important fostering and adoption is for homeless animals. Many dogs who are fearful in shelters come out of their shells and transform into happy pups once in the safety of a foster or forever home.

So, Green Monsters, if you are planning to bring a four-legged companion into your family, remember to always adopt and not shop!
