This news is sure to melt your heart, Green Monsters. While the back stories of animals who end up in shelters are often too tragic for words, there are few things more wonderful than hearing about how some manage to find unexpected solace and friendship in one another. This was what happened recently in Barkers Pet Motel and Grooming (BPMG) in Alberta, Canada, when two nervous new puppies, Hannah and Kari, arrived … and immediately got themselves a new canine “foster mom!”

The two pups were sent to BPMG from Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society. Maggie, the “mama dog,” had been adopted from the local Humane Society a couple of weeks beforehand, but was staying at the shelter while her guardians were away. She recently had her own puppies taken away from her, so when she heard the new arrivals crying in the night, she decided to sneak out of her pen and lie down beside theirs!

Sandi Aldred of BPMG realized what was going on after checking the feed from the kennel’s live surveillance cameras. “We watched her on the cameras and she went straight around and she found their room. She paid them a lot of attention and you could see her little tail wagging. And she’d do the little bow down to them and poke them through the chain link gate of their room. She just decided that was where she was going to stay until we came to get her,” Aldred explained.

Maggie obviously had no intention of leaving the pups.

Aldred returned to the shelter to let Maggie in to the pups’ enclosure – and all three of them quickly became best friends.

BPMG staff were thrilled by the dogs’ sweet new friendship. “We see a lot of adorable things here at Barkers but this story takes the cake,” they said. Maggie’s guardians returned the following day to pick her up, and were not surprised to hear that she had decided to take on the role of mothering the two puppies. After Aldred showed them the sweet scene of Maggie cuddling the babies (named Hannah and Kari), they agreed that they had “a pretty special dog on their hands.”

As for Hannah and Kari? They had no trouble finding forever homes.

It was love at first sight for both of their new guardians!

Doesn’t it just make your heart sing with joy? Let’s hope that all of these pooches will get to enjoy many years of happiness and friendship with their new, love-struck hoomans. If you are thinking of welcoming a furry friend into your life, why not check out the posts below for advice?
