China McClain, a well-known Disney star and singer, has apologized after a video of her touching an endangered Hawaiian green sea turtle went viral, sparking backlash from environmental advocates and local Hawaiians. The video, which McClain originally shared with her 7 million Instagram followers, showed her gently touching a sleeping sea turtle on a Maui beach. Though the footage was recorded two years ago, the response was immediate and overwhelmingly critical.
Many social media users condemned the act, pointing out that touching or disturbing sea turtles is illegal under Hawaiian law. Even Hawaii Governor Josh Green weighed in, urging McClain to educate herself on the importance of protecting the islands’ fragile ecosystems. “Please delete this video, and do better,” Green commented. Following the public outcry, McClain removed the post and issued an apology, admitting she was unaware of the laws at the time.
Green sea turtles, or honu, hold cultural significance for Native Hawaiians and are protected under federal and state regulations. Their populations have been threatened by habitat loss, illegal poaching, and Climate change. According to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, feeding or touching these turtles is considered a disturbance and is illegal without a permit. However, enforcement remains challenging when incidents like McClain’s are reported after the fact.
This incident serves as a stark reminder that respecting wildlife means keeping a safe distance. Hawaii’s marine life is already under immense pressure due to climate change and human activity. Instead of getting too close, eco-conscious travelers should admire these creatures from afar and Support Conservation efforts. Next time you visit a place as beautiful as Hawaii, let’s all remember: real love for nature means protecting it, not interfering with it.
