A sheep named Kiki is turning heads at a Massachusetts sanctuary after learning to navigate her own motorized wheelchair. Kiki, who lives at Don’t Forget Us, Pet Us in North Dartmouth, lost mobility in her back legs but has been given a second chance thanks to a custom-made cart designed just for her. She now tilts a joystick with her head to move forward, backward, and side to side—often at what caretakers describe as “crazy teenager” speed.

Stories like Kiki’s highlight not only the resilience of animals but also the role that technology and compassion can play in improving their quality of life. Animal sanctuaries across the U.S. are increasingly using mobility devices for disabled animals, from dogs fitted with wheelchairs to ducks given prosthetic feet. These innovations don’t just restore mobility—they allow animals to live more enriching, social, and natural lives.

The joy surrounding Kiki’s newfound independence has spread far beyond the sanctuary, with many people online celebrating her determination. It’s a powerful reminder that animals are individuals with intelligence, personalities, and the will to thrive if given the chance. Similar breakthroughs have been seen with pigs, cows, and even elephants, showing that disability is not the end for animals when humans invest in care rather than exploitation.

Supporting sanctuaries like Don’t Forget Us, Pet Us ensures more animals like Kiki get the chance to live freely and happily. Instead of funding industries that exploit and harm animals, we can choose to Support organizations that prioritize animal welfare and dignity. Every donation, volunteer hour, or even plant-based meal helps build a kinder world where all living beings—disabled or not—are valued.
