As record-breaking heat sweeps across the U.S., it’s not just humans who are struggling—animals, both domestic and wild, are facing serious risks. According to a recent Associated Press article by David Fischer, Florida shelters and pet owners are ramping up efforts to keep animals safe from the extreme temperatures.

In West Palm Beach, Animal Care and Control is educating the public on how to spot and prevent heat stroke and dehydration in pets. The stakes are high—dogs left in cars can overheat in minutes, even with windows cracked. Arielle Weinberger from the shelter warns that pavement can hit 125°F (52°C), burning paws and putting animals at risk. Her advice is simple: if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet.

Meanwhile, caring for larger animals is even trickier. Alicia Grace of Pink Flamingo Stables in Lake Worth Beach manages 11 horses and ponies, shielding them from South Florida’s punishing heat and humidity. “We have to hydrate constantly, use cooling blankets, and provide shade,” she says. Air conditioning for horses exists—but is expensive and far from practical.

Even wild animals are struggling. Leaving out bowls of clean water can help community cats and wildlife like raccoons, birds, and squirrels survive scorching days. Signs of heat stroke—vomiting, dizziness, and lethargy—need urgent attention.

Extreme weather like this is becoming the norm. It’s another harsh reminder that the climate crisis isn’t a future threat—it’s already here, impacting the most vulnerable among us.

So let’s do more than just talk about the weather. Go plant-based, ditch fossil fuels, and Support climate action that protects every species, not just ours.
