California’s Air Resources Board and large truck manufacturers have come to an agreement regarding the state’s ban on the sale of new diesel trucks by 2036. Manufacturers have agreed to accept California’s recent legislation that will phase out big trucks and buses that run on diesel. The state will instead encourage a transition to electric big rigs. Known as the Clean Truck Partnership, this deal gives the manufacturers additional flexibility in making the transition to electric vehicles. After three months of negotiations, the Clean Truck Partnership will help avoid costly legal battles and will help maintain nationwide standards for truck Pollution regulations.

California is the United States’ biggest market for large, diesel-powered trucks. This status gives the state special power when negotiating with truck manufacturers. However, California is consistently ranked as having some of the worst air quality in the country. The state recently adopted new legislation that will help to lessen pollution from large trucks that transport goods to and from ports. California is home to two of the busiest ports in the world, Los Angeles and Long Beach. Pollution from large trucks tends to be concentrated around large ports, making this a particularly important problem for the state.
Big trucks make up only around 3 percent of vehicles on the road in California but are responsible for a large portion of air Pollution. This is due to the trucks’ more pollutive diesel engines and the high number of miles they drive. Diesel engines release high amounts of nitrogen oxide and fine particle diesel Pollution. The transportation sector as a whole generates the greatest annual amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Moving towards electric commercial trucks in California will hopefully motivate other states to follow suit.
California’s new rule has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. Additionally, the state has aligned itself with EPA rules around nitrogen oxide emissions. Eight states have adopted legislation similar to that of California. This represents around one-quarter of America’s truck market.
