According to the Associated Press, Aalborg Zoo in northern Denmark is under fire after publicly asking people to Donate their unwanted small pets—such as guinea pigs, rabbits, and chickens—to be euthanized and fed to captive predators. The zoo claimed in a Facebook post that the practice was intended to reflect the “natural food chain” and ensure animal welfare, nutrition, and predator well-being. They added that staff would euthanize the pets “gently” before offering them as food.
While the zoo frames this as a sustainable way of reducing waste and mimicking natural diets, the reality is far more troubling. Encouraging the public to view their pets as disposable “feedstock” reinforces a mindset that animals are commodities, not individuals with lives worth protecting. Even if predation is part of nature, forcing domesticated animals bred to trust humans into this role highlights the inherent contradiction of zoos, which often justify captivity under the guise of Conservation.
This isn’t the first time a European zoo has made headlines for such practices. In 2014, Copenhagen Zoo controversially killed a healthy young giraffe named Marius, sparking global outrage. Critics argue that zoos often prioritize spectacle over genuine animal protection, and that there are ethical alternatives—such as improving sanctuaries, expanding plant-based enrichment for carnivores, and ending the captivity of wild predators altogether.
Instead of feeding rabbits and guinea pigs to lions behind glass, we should be questioning why apex predators are still confined in artificial environments at all. True Conservation happens in the wild, not within enclosures where animals serve as entertainment.
Every time we accept the logic of using one animal to serve another in captivity, we step further from compassion. Choosing to Support sanctuaries over zoos, adopting pets responsibly, and embracing plant-based lifestyles are real ways to show that animals deserve more than to be treated as expendable.
