When an Oakland, California man named Robert Jones visited the emergency room in November of 2021, he assumed that he would be given medication for his symptoms and quickly return home. However, the results of the visit were gut-wrenching. Jones visited the emergency room with a fever; he had assumed that his right big toe was infected. Yet the diagnosis he received from doctors was quite different. Robert was told that he was diabetic. He ended up having his right big toe, and part of his left big toe amputated.

8. Ecuadorian Amazon Continues to Suffer from Oil Contamination

Between 1964 and 1990, oil giant Chevron-Texaco drilled for oil in the Ecuadorian Amazon. During this time, they are alleged to have dumped over 15.8 billion gallons of contaminated wastewater and 17 million gallons of crude oil in the Amazon. Although an international tribunal ruled in favor of the oil company in 2018, the effects of this environmental catastrophe continue to be felt in the Ecuadorian Amazon to this day.
