While puppies have an adoption rate of up to 60 percent, it can be much harder for senior dogs to find new homes. They may have only a 25 percent chance of a loving new family according to the World Animal Foundation. People may let their age, fear of extra veterinary bills, or worry about problem behaviors stop them from opening their homes to a senior animal. However, senior animals often are much mellower, have previous experience with children or other pets, and have reached their full size. Additionally, they may already be housebroken or otherwise trained.
