Cow Uses Tool For The First Time Ever In This Video

A pet cow named Veronika just changed what many of us assume about cattle intelligence. According to Emily Anthes, researchers watched the 13 year old cow in Austria pick up a wooden broom and scratch hard to reach spots with real precision. Veronika lives as a cherished pets companion, which means she has space, time, and human attention that many cows never get. In controlled trials, she did not just swing the broom around. She chose the bristled end for tough skin along her back, then switched to the smooth handle when she prodded more sensitive areas.

The team documented the behavior in a Current Biology study, calling it flexible tool use in cattle for the first time. Tool use is something we love to celebrate in wildlife like crows, elephants, and dolphins, so it is striking to see it in an animal we usually label as dull. The researchers also suggested that the ability may be there in many cows, but it stays hidden when life is cramped and repetitive.
