As the world gathered in Brazil for COP30 to push for stronger climate action, the United States made headlines for a very different reason. According to NBC News reporter Denise Chow, the Trump administration unveiled a sweeping set of rollbacks that would open huge areas to new oil drilling and weaken long standing protections for wetlands, streams, and endangered species. At a moment when nearly two hundred nations were trying to protect the earth and stabilize the environment, the absence of the U S was felt sharply.

The administration’s plan includes opening more than one billion acres of coastal waters near California and Florida to drilling for the first time in decades. That move drew backlash from Conservation groups, local leaders, and even some Republican lawmakers who warned that drilling would threaten coastal tourism, marine life, and community safety. These coastal ecosystems are already vulnerable as the climate warms, and expanded drilling pushes them even further into harm’s way.

Alongside the drilling push came a proposal to dramatically narrow which wetlands and streams qualify for protection under the Clean Water Act. Wetlands help absorb floodwaters, Support drinking water supplies, and shelter wildlife that keeps the wider ecosystem functioning. Environmental groups warn that rolling back these safeguards could threaten community health and place millions at greater risk as storms intensify.

The administration also moved to erode the Endangered Species Act by making it easier to remove threatened species from protection and harder to add new ones. Red wolves, manatees, and countless other animals already struggle to survive in shrinking habitats, and conservationists fear these changes could accelerate extinctions at a time when biodiversity loss is speeding up across the planet.

For many observers at COP30, the message was clear. While the global community is pushing for plant based solutions, renewable energy, and a shift toward a healthier relationship with the natural world, the U S signaled a retreat from climate leadership. Protecting the environment will require all nations to lean into bold action, not pull back when the earth needs unity most.

Choose compassion for the planet by supporting Conservation efforts, embracing vegan and plant based choices, and standing up for the living world we all depend on.
