In a passionate plea during the 78th Session of the U.N. General Assembly in New York City, Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro urged the global community to shift its attention from wars to the pressing concern of climate change. Highlighting the profound impacts of global conflicts, he emphasized the urgency of peace, not only for its intrinsic value but also to free up global resources and focus on addressing the climatic changes that threaten our planet.

With Colombia grappling with a six-decade conflict that has tragically claimed the lives of at least 450,000 people, President Petro’s message carries significant weight. He has been making fervent efforts to establish peace in his homeland, negotiating with rebel groups and crime gangs to put an end to this longstanding conflict.
The Colombian leader made a compelling proposal: “I propose ending war so we have the time to save ourselves.” He stressed the importance of resolving major global conflicts, like those in Ukraine and between Israel and the Palestinians. While recognizing that these are not the only wars the world faces, Petro believes that achieving peace in these regions could serve as a beacon, showing the world how to make peace in other conflict-ridden areas.
But why this strong call for peace now? Petro aptly described Climate change as “the mother of all crises.” As the earth’s temperature rises, so does the urgency to act. President Petro asserts that wars and conflicts divert our attention, time, and resources from this pressing issue.
His vision for the world is clear: move toward a decarbonized economy, where sustainable practices are the norm, and our planet’s health is at the forefront of global agendas. By uniting under the shared goal of combatting Climate change, nations can set aside their differences and work towards a brighter, more sustainable future.
