The Environmental Impact and Sustainability of Shared E-Scooter Systems

In recent years, the United States has witnessed a remarkable shift in urban transportation. The rise of shared, low-occupancy vehicles, such as bicycles and electric scooters, is revolutionizing the way people move within cities. This emerging trend, known as micromobility, has gained significant traction as an eco-friendly alternative for short-distance travel. As urban congestion and environmental concerns continue to grow, the adoption of these micromobility solutions has become an integral part of the modern transportation landscape.

The Transition to Micromobility

Over the past decade, the utilization of shared micromobility options has soared. In 2010, 321,000 trips were recorded, but by 2021, this number had skyrocketed to a staggering 112 million. These micromobility vehicles have been ingeniously designed to bridge the gap between distances too short to warrant driving and too long to comfortably walk. Astonishingly, nearly 60 percent of car trips in 2017 spanned less than six miles, underscoring the necessity for such innovative solutions.

Dockless E-Scooter Systems and Urban Mobility

At the forefront of this micromobility revolution are the rental dockless e-scooter systems. Introduced in 2018, these systems have rapidly expanded across American cities, amassing a presence in 65 locations within just a year. The allure of e-scooters extends beyond convenience; their absence of tailpipe emissions and potential to supplant short car trips positions them as a more environmentally conscious mode of transportation.

Environmental Impacts and Sustainability

Giovanni Circella, the director of the 3 Revolutions Future Mobility Program at the University of California, Davis, affirms that e-scooters “tend to have somewhat positive effects in terms of environmental sustainability.” Their ability to displace more polluting transportation options, including private cars and ride-hailing services, marks a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions. Notably, a 2018 pilot program in Portland revealed that 34 percent of local riders and 48 percent of visitors opted for e-scooters instead of traditional vehicles or ride-sharing services.

Furthermore, e-scooters contribute to a culture of active travel, encouraging investment in infrastructure that supports biking and other active modes of transportation. Nevertheless, the ecological effects of e-scooters are not without complexity. While they can displace car trips, they also have the potential to replace trips that would have been made by walking, biking, or public transportation.

Navigating Sustainability Challenges

Studies underscore the multifaceted nature of e-scooter sustainability. A 2020 study presented at the IEEE European Technology and Engineering Management Summit dissected various scenarios to evaluate e-scooter environmental impact. In the best-case scenario, e-scooters with a lifespan of 24 months and swappable batteries had a lower environmental impact than private cars and certain other modes of transport, though they fell short of bicycles and electric bicycles. Conversely, in a worst-case scenario with a six-month lifespan, e-scooters exhibited a higher environmental impact.

Towards a Greener Future

While e-scooters offer a greener mode of transport, there’s room for further improvement. A key recommendation from experts is the integration of sustainable practices in the e-scooter system’s operations. Transitioning to electric vehicles for e-scooter redistribution and utilizing renewable energy sources for charging can substantially decrease the environmental footprint of these systems.

By establishing solar docking stations, relying on renewable energy for charging, and deploying electric vehicles for distribution, e-scooter companies can amplify their positive impact on the environment. Policymakers can also play a pivotal role by encouraging responsible usage, implementing regulations against misuse, and demanding sturdier scooter designs from suppliers.
