A beautiful, long-haired chihuahua mom, with a golden coat and furry ears, was found abandoned in the backyard of a Barstow, Calif., family home, in which the family had moved away in January.
Neighbors heard the sounds of a mother dog tending to puppies, and went to investigate and rescue the dog family from the cold outdoors. The chihuahua had no puppies with her, but she was using her mothering instincts to nurse a tiny grey male kitten. She surely saved the feline’ s life in freezing temperatures that dropped to 20 degrees.
The neighbors brought the pair to the Barstow Animal Shelter, and they were transferred together to the Helen Woodward Animal Center on February 27. Dressed up in colorful beads, they made their public debut at the Center’s 2nd annual Doggie Gras Parade and Fat Cat Tuesday celebration on March 4. The dog was named “Beignet” and the kitten “Gumbo” in honor of the Mardi Gras season.
After all they’ve been through, the Center hopes to keep Beignet and Gumbo together and is looking for a single adopter for both. Beignet is now 1 year and 7 months old, and Gumbo is 5 months old. You can apply for adoption or send a donation on the Center’s website. More photos of Beignet and Gumbo, including those from the Mardi Gras parade, are available on Facebook.
