Losing a beloved canine companion is always heartbreaking. Fortunately, there may soon be a way to extend your pup’s life. A biotech company called Loyal has recently begun clinical trials for a new anti-aging pill that may help senior dogs live longer and stay healthier. Loyal is recruiting volunteers from across the United States for the STAY study.

Loyal previously submitted an injectable anti-aging drug to the Food and Drug Administration for approval. Called LOY-001, this medication supposedly helps large breed dogs live longer. It is also supposed to help them stay healthy during their old age. Dogs from larger breeds tend to experience shorter lifespans than smaller breeds. LOY-001 is expected to launch in 2026, pending FDA approval.
The new anti-aging pill, LOY-002 is also supposed to help canine companions experience longer life spans. The oral medication is meant to be given once daily as prescribed by a veterinarian. It works by “improving metabolic fitness”, which is expected to assist with prolonging the canine lifespan.
LOY-002 is not only for large breeds. The study is enrolling dogs from all but the smallest breeds. Dogs must weigh at least 14 pounds to enroll in the study. They must also be at least ten years of age, and live near a participating veterinary clinic.
Participants will be a part of the study for four years and must take a chewable pill every day. Of the participants, half will be given a placebo while the remainder will be given LOY-002 anti-aging pills. Humans must also complete surveys documenting their dog’s quality of life. They must also complete regular six-week checkups at a participating vet. Overall, the study will follow 1,000 dogs. If all goes well, and the FDA approves LOY-002, the canine anti-aging pill could launch as soon as 2025.
