This baby beaver is learning to perform tasks on his own – watch this video as he cleans up after a swim and grooms himself. Adorable!
While we’re on the subject of beavers, watch out for vanilla flavoring. Some of it contains castoreum, which comes from the beaver’s castor sacs, located between the pelvis and base of the tail. Castoreum has a musky vanilla scent which is created by the animals’ diet of bark and leaves. How is this substance derived? Well, brace yourself for this. Joanne Crawford, a wildlife ecologist at Southern Illinois University, says, “You can milk the anal glands so you can extract the fluid…You can squirt [castoreum] out. It’s pretty gross.” Yuck! Pretty gross indeed. Let’s leave the beavers to their business and not milk them, eh?
This video is from the Wildlife Hotline of MO & IL, and the beaver pictured is not a pet; he is under the care of NWRA and IWRC Certified Wildlife Professionals. It’s important to note that the Wildlife Hotline does not condone wildlife as pets, and believes it to be inhumane, cruel treatment.
