In a landmark announcement on February 14, 2024, the Beagle Freedom Project (BFP) declared the end of one-third of the flea and tick product testing industry, marking the end of decades of brutal experimentation on animals. This monumental move spares thousands of dogs and cats from future testing and the cycle of cruel purpose breeding.
The Nowata, Oklahoma property and facilities, where animals were once held captive, have been acquired by the Beagle Freedom Project. This site is now being transformed into Freedom Fields, a sanctuary dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of animals previously subjected to testing.
Over 200 dogs and cats have been liberated from the closed laboratory, saved from a lifetime of toxic and painful testing. At Freedom Fields, these animals will receive comprehensive medical care, nutritious food, and safe living conditions. They will also experience love, play, enrichment, and freedom – elements they were deprived of during their time in captivity.
Shannon Keith, President, and Founder of BFP emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “Not only have we rescued hundreds of animals from being tested on and certain death, we have also created a pathway for others to do the same.” She further added, “We are overjoyed to give more than 200 dogs and cats their freedom and identity, and to transform an animal testing facility into a place of hope, happiness, rehabilitation, and love.”
The transformation of Freedom Fields includes extensive renovations and structural additions such as new barns and habitats for large farm animals, landscaped dog parks, indoor/outdoor spaces, and visitor centers aimed at educating guests about animal testing and adoption opportunities. The decision to shut down the Nowata facility followed years of witnessing the horrors endured by the animals, including burns, infections, seizures, and maddening pain. BFP’s efforts culminated in the successful surrender of the animals and the cessation of testing operations. BFP is currently negotiating the closure of another large lab and collaborating with companies to promote natural alternatives to toxic chemicals used in pest management.
Corey Feldman, put the victory into perfect words, “Closing down the animal testing lab in Oklahoma is not only the end of horrific product trials on hundreds of innocent animals, BFP will transform the property into a place of hope and healing where these and other animal testing and abuse survivors will receive the love, care, and freedom they have been deprived of their entire lives. If we could all just have a little more compassion for these helpless beings, all testing labs could be abolished, once and for all.”
