Most people throw something away and never think beyond the use that item had before it was deemed trash. Japanese artist Natsumi Tomita is not one of those people. Taking discarded items that didn’t quite make it to the landfill (thankfully), Tomita creates colorful, playful and creative animal sculptures.

“Each of these things, which we usually use everyday, had a story, until they were thrown away.” The artist said about her unique medium. “There are bicycles that were once ridden, broken dustpans, signboards from loan sharks, lost umbrellas. Every object had purpose and meaning before they were tossed away. Taking these things that I collect, I connect them and create new life for them.”

Art is an incredible way to give new purpose to an item that has no perceived value anymore. In the true spirit of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,” one person’s discarded bottle cap or broken desk fan can suddenly become the most talked about item in your home, office or gallery!

Wow, my hands and feet are forks! That’s totally nuts!

Yesterday, I heard a mom say that my feet were a much better use for her son’s video game controllers and he got upset. Sorry kid, I had to agree with her, heh, heh.
