Following an anthrax disease outbreak in northern Ghana, the neighboring country of Nigeria has advised its citizens to stop consuming animal hides. The hides, locally known as “pomo”, are a cultural delicacy. Since they are cheaper than other animal products, they are also a staple for many people.
Anthrax is a bacterial disease that is often transmitted from animals to humans by handling or consuming infected animals. It affects both wild and domestic animals. It is not transmissible from person to person according to the Centers for Disease Control. Anthrax symptoms in humans include fever, muscle aches, and serious lung problems. One of the best ways to prevent anthrax from spreading is to vaccinate domestic animals. The Nigerian government is currently urging farmers to vaccinate their animals against anthrax.

Currently, there have not been any reported cases of anthrax in Nigeria. However, due to the country’s proximity and trade with Ghana, officials are urging citizens to stop consuming pomo. However, due to cultural norms and cost considerations, not all citizens are able to follow these warnings. Zoonotic diseases pose a significant health threat to human and animal welfare worldwide. This was demonstrated by the coronavirus pandemic.
Covid-19 is believed to have originated in a wet market. Wet markets frequently sell live exotic animals for consumption. Animals are frequently kept crammed together, thus increasing the likelihood of diseases jumping species and mutating. While Western cultures often view wet markets as dangerous, we must remember that the factory farm system that exists in the United States and Europe also crams large numbers of animals together in unsafe and unsanitary conditions.
This is also a major way in which diseases can spread and mutate. Since many of these animals are from the same species, it is also more likely that viruses will spread a significant number of times. This may lead to increases in dangerous mutations. Indeed, many experts warn that antibiotic resistance as a result of factory farming is likely to be the next widespread pandemic.
Sign these petitions to protect animal welfare and human health by urging the U.S Government to Ban All Wet Markets, and Stop Factory Farming.
