Ken Wayne, a beloved Bay Area television anchor for over 30 years, has taken his passion for aviation and animal rescue to new heights. At 63, Wayne retired from broadcasting to dedicate more time to Flying Tails, a nonprofit organization he founded six years ago to rescue abused and abandoned animals.
Using his Cessna 182 Skylane, Wayne has flown across California, transporting injured, abandoned, or at-risk animals to safe havens. His missions have included rescuing dogs, bear cubs, raccoons, and even a bald eagle. Wayne’s efforts have earned him admiration from rescue groups and individuals alike.
Alice Mayn, CEO of Lily’s Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary, praises Wayne’s commitment, highlighting how flying is less stressful for the animals than long car rides. Odessa Gunn of Little Trooper Ranch echoes this sentiment, noting Wayne’s critical role in providing otherwise unavailable transportation for rescue animals.
Recently, Wayne incorporated Flying Tails as a nonprofit, allowing him to expand his reach with donor Support. On a recent mission, Wayne and his co-pilot transported a rescued Chihuahua and a Golden Retriever mix from Southern California to new homes in Sonoma County.
Wayne’s dedication extends beyond dogs. He has transported bear cubs to a wildlife center and a bald eagle back into the wild after rehabilitation. His wife, Carole, often assists on these missions, demonstrating the couple’s shared commitment to animal welfare.
