J.R.R. Tolkien once said, “Not all those who wander are lost.” That’s certainly the case for these wayward pufflings (young puffins) and petrel chicks that are leaving their nests, trying to find their way. On a clear night, moonlight guides them to their destination, but if it’s foggy or cloudy they can be lead astray by artificial lights. Poor little things often end up following vehicle headlights, and get hit. But, lucky for them, Puffin Patrol is here to come to the rescue!
Every year, Witless Bay residents come together at the beach to help send the lost pufflings on their way. It’s a boon for the town’s tourism and brings community members together as they measure, swab and weigh the little cuties for release. After all the info is gathered, the baby birds are carried to the water’s edge and given a flying boost as they’re set free, towards the islands they came from.
Everyone deserves a little boost now and then to get them going and on the right track, including the thousands of wayward pufflings that have been rescued and freed at Witless Bay!
