Over the past 40 years, around 52 percent of the world’s wildlife has disappeared, largely due to human actions. Pollution, poaching, and Climate change are among the top threats to the world’s animal population and sadly, all of these factors are impacting aquatic turtles. Nearly all species of sea turtle have been listed as critically endangered in the past decade and without concerted efforts to help these animals, they are in grave danger of extinction.
Thankfully, many concerned people are stepping up for turtles by helping to protect their nesting grounds and raise awareness for the struggling population. The little hatchlings in this video are some of the lucky turtles who reside at Archie Carr Wildlife Refuge.
Seeing these tiny turtles poking their heads out from underneath the sand for the first time is sure to bring a smile to your face! But their cuteness isn’t the only thing that will make you smile – a survey done by the UCF Marine Turtle Research Group confirms that over 20,000 turtles were hatched on the Archie Carr beaches! While this is just the beginning of a very difficult journey ahead, we wish them all the best along the way!
