In a heroic act of compassion, Chinese animal activists have saved 19 dogs from a grim fate at an illegal slaughterhouse in Yulin, right before the city’s infamous annual dog meat festival. This annual event has been a focal point of animal welfare controversy for years, causing distress to animal lovers worldwide.

The gruesome scene discovered by the brave activists from Vshine, partners of Humane Society International (HSI), was chilling. Dogs cowered amidst the remains of their slaughtered companions, trembling from fear and malnutrition. Heartbreakingly, these dogs showed the signs of previously being domesticated pets, suggesting they had been stolen and subjected to horrifying conditions before reaching the slaughterhouse.
In addition to the horrendous cruelty, the dog meat trade carries significant health risks. The World Health Organization has warned that it can spread diseases like rabies and cholera, which conflict with China’s goal of eliminating rabies by 2025. Yet, despite these dangers and in violation of China’s food safety law, this cruel trade continues with minimal legal intervention.
Encouragingly, a recent survey indicates that only a small percentage of Yulin residents (19.3%) oppose a ban on the dog meat trade. Most (73%) only occasionally consume dog or cat meat, while 18% never do at all. This indicates a significant shift in attitudes that could pave the way for policy change, much like Shenzhen’s 2020 ban on dog and cat meat.
“We are so grateful to the Chinese activists for taking a stand against this hideously cruel trade,” said Dr. Peter Li, HSI’s China policy specialist. “Most people across China do not support this cruelty, and surveys show that even in Yulin, most people are not opposed to a ban. It’s time to put an end to this misery.”
So, where do we go from here? Let’s join the wave of change. By raising awareness about this brutal trade, supporting animal welfare organizations, and urging political leaders to enact and enforce stricter Animal rights laws, we can each play a role in making our world more compassionate.
