The Rock Pits is an agricultural area in Miami, Florida where heartless people go to abandon their dogs. Each day a new dog is dumped and left to survive on their own. For these previously domesticated dogs, this is literally a death sentence. They are scared, confused, and certainly, don’t know how to fend for themselves.
Many of the dogs will either starve, get hit by a car, or even be shot by residents that don’t want “strays,” lingering around their property. They don’t understand that all these dogs want, is to be seen and cared for once again. Thanks to some compassionate people that have seen what is happening and DO care, there have been organizations formed- like the Redland Rock Pit Rescue and Guardians of Rescue, to help these sweet, innocent dogs. One such dog is named Knox.
Knox is a sweet-faced labrador that has been living in the rock pits but was recently found unable to move. It seems he was hit by a car because he is paralyzed on the back end. After being evaluated by a vet, the young lab was also found to have a tummy full of rocks– one thing many dogs living in the rock pits resort to eating. Needless to say, Knox is need of urgent care, including surgery. Unfortunately, many rescue groups in the Florida area are under a lot of financial stress … especially after the recent hurricanes. They are in need of immediate donations, no matter how small the amount.
Please remember that adopting a dog is a serious commitment. Pets should be treated with the same love, respect, and care as any other member of the family. When a dog is abandoned, whether on the streets or at a shelter, it affects not only that dog in ways you can’t imagine, but also other dogs awaiting a home and even the shelter workers and rescues themselves- emotionally and financially.
