New York City’s harbor witnessed a somber arrival on Saturday as a cruise ship, the Meraviglia, docked with a massive, deceased whale sprawled across its bow. According to reports from local US media, the 44-foot-long whale, identified as an endangered sei whale, was discovered when the ship arrived at the Port of Brooklyn.
Andrea Gomez, a spokesperson for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries, confirmed the incident, highlighting it as yet another unfortunate consequence of the interaction between large vessels and marine life. The Meraviglia, owned by MSC Cruises based in Geneva, had been en route to ports in New England and Canada.
MSC Cruises swiftly informed relevant authorities upon the discovery, stating they had implemented regulations to prevent such collisions with marine animals. Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of marine life, the cruise line assured cooperation with investigations into the incident.
