In Freeport, Florida, Alaqua Animal Refuge has taken in 21 horses suffering from extreme neglect, following a rescue operation conducted with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Washington County Animal Control. These horses, found in dire conditions, are now receiving care at Alaqua’s sanctuary.
The rescue occurred during freezing weather, which added urgency to the situation. The horses, already malnourished and mistreated, faced a life-threatening risk from the cold.
“No animal should ever endure what these horses have been through,” said Laurie Hood, Alaqua’s Founder and CEO. She expressed gratitude for the involvement of law enforcement and animal control, emphasizing the long and expensive recovery process ahead for the horses.
The animals need round-the-clock medical attention, proper nutrition, and specialized care. Alaqua, already at full capacity, had to implement emergency sheltering to accommodate the new arrivals. This effort has placed a significant financial burden on the organization, prompting a public appeal for donations.
Located on 100 acres in Freeport, Alaqua Animal Refuge serves as a sanctuary for animals in need, offering rehabilitation and second chances. While the refuge remains steadfast in its mission, the current situation highlights the need for additional community Support during emergencies.
To assist, Alaqua is asking for donations to cover veterinary care, special feed, and ongoing Support for the horses. Contributions can be made online at: https://secure.qgiv.com/for/wchorses.
