Last month, nearly 350 animals were rescued from a property in Owen County, Indiana, following an animal seizure operation. On July 8, deputies from the Owen County Sheriff’s Department, supported by the Owen County Humane Society, executed a search warrant at a residence on Truesdel Road in Gosport. The conditions were alarming, with authorities discovering multiple species of animals suffering from severe neglect.
The Humane Society reported that many animals were found without food or water, and the remains of at least 10 animals were discovered on the property. In total, 348 animals were rescued over two visits, including dogs, chickens, sheep, rabbits, and even exotic pets like bearded dragons. Several of the animals displayed signs of malnutrition, neglect, and poor living conditions, with some found in cages too small to allow proper movement.
Court documents reveal particularly distressing scenes, such as chickens crammed into cages without adequate space, food, or water, and a Great Pyrenees dog tied to a tree, showing clear signs of neglect. Horses were observed with their ribs visible through their coats, and many animals, including goats and pigs, were found in unsanitary conditions.
The rescue operation involved multiple animal welfare organizations, including A Critter’s Chance, Oinking Acres Farm Rescue and Sanctuary, and Winking Reptile Rescue. The Indiana State Board of Animal Health also played a crucial role in the operation. Two individuals, Cody Wood and Amanda Simpson, face charges related to animal cruelty and improper disposal of deceased animals. They are scheduled to appear in court for a jury trial in January 2025.
The Owen County Humane Society has reported that veterinary care for the rescued animals has already exceeded $20,000. Those interested in supporting the ongoing care or adopting one of the rescued animals are encouraged to visit the Humane Society’s website.
