Bulletproof coffee is taking the health world by storm! But, if you haven’t heard about this controversial health trend, here’s your chance to get acquainted.

Basically, it’s your normal cup of joe with a choice of healthy dietary fat… and lots of it!

This entire trend follows recent studies and research regarding the health benefits of consuming healthy dietary fats such as monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, small amounts of saturated fat, and the omega fatty acids. While unhealthy fats, such as trans fatty acids, are still being cautioned against, these other healthy fats are experiencing a revolution. Not only are healthy dietary fats delicious — think avocado, olive oil, nuts, seeds, coconut oil, coconut cream, and full-fat coconut milk — they are also linked to health benefits such as lower LDL or “bad” cholesterol, lower blood pressure, lower triglycerides, higher HDL or “good” cholesterol, protection against heart disease, and even stroke prevention.

Hence the invention of bulletproof coffee, a blend of one of our favorite beverages with one of the tastiest natural ingredients!

There are many ways to create bulletproof coffee. For example, Phil Maffetone — a highly experienced health and wellness clinician, coach, and innovator —  calls it “fat-burning coffee” and swears by its powers. Maffetone explains that coffee actually has a fat-burning potential and has been shown to “reduce stored body fat, especially belly fat, and lower the risk of diabetes, liver and colon cancer, cardiovascular disease and chronic inflammation.” Plus, coffee polyphenols, the “—naturally occurring phytonutrients in the bean — also can help regulate body-wide fat metabolism, improving regulation of insulin and glucose, and helping to reduce the tendency toward fat storage and cardiovascular disease as well.”

For those seeking vegan alternatives to the traditional animal-product bulletproof coffee, turn to plant-based healthy fats!

First off is coconut. Coconut is incredibly rich in healthy fats and our bodies are able to metabolize coconut products much easier than animal-based fats. Therefore, coconut is much easier on your digestive tract. Plus, you can go with simple raw coconut oil, full-fat coconut milk, coconut cream, or even the incredibly concentrated medium chain-triglyceride oil, also called MCT oil, which is oftentimes sourced from coconut. Another great plant-based fat-burning coffee option is cacao butter. This cacao-based creamy delight is not only rich in healthy, plant-based fats, but cacao butter is also rich in antioxidants.

Here are a few plant-based vegan ingredients available on Amazon that will give your coffee that fat-burning kick!

1. Premium MCT Oil derived only from Non-GMO CoconutsPremium MCT Oil derived only from Non-GMO Coconuts

Premium MCT Oil derived only from Non-GMO Coconuts

This Premium MCT Oil derived only from Non-GMO Coconuts will get you off to the right start in the morning! Specifically, this MCT oil will help your body achieve ketosis — the process which your body burns fat for energy — and thereby burning more fat and boosting muscle production. This full spectrum MCT oil is 100 percent sourced from coconut with no palm oil. This product is vegan-friendly, non-GMO project verified, and is third party verified! MCT oil is odorless, meaning you can add it to your morning brew without changing that wonderful, aromatic coffee flavor. A 32-liquid ounce bottle costs $26.55.

Ryan says “This MCT oil allows me to get 30 to 60 extra grams of hidden fat in my diet every day. 1 to 2 tablespoons makes my scrambled eggs fluffy and there is absolutely no aroma or flavor. I combine this oil with lard for any frying, chicken, fish you name it. One bottle lasts forever. Before every workout, I make my ketone water and squirt a tablespoon directly into my mouth for an extra boost of energy. I did my own research by the way. Do yours. You will find out that study after study after study praises the benefits of Medium Chain Triglycerides. Also, I just had lab work done at my doctor, my cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugars were the best they have ever been. I will be 49 this year and in the best health of my life.”

A little goes a Long way, if your Using it for Skin Care & Hair Care (Dab two Fingers and Rub it in) No Grit, it’s Silky Smooth and isn’t Oily where you Feel like you got Gunk on your Body or in your Hair. Now for Cooking it’s Great as Well, It has a Very Very Faint Taste of Coconut (Actually kind of Bland) and it’s Not Sweet even though it’ Smells Sweet. It Heats up Pretty Quick in the Pan so No Extremely Hit Heats, wouldn’t want it to try and take on a Burnt Taste. Great Product if you ask me, I’ll Buy again when I’m Out.”

3. Navitas Organics Cacao ButterNavitas Organics Cacao Butter

Navitas Organics Cacao Butter

This Navitas Organics Cacao Butter will provide a healthy dose of fat, theobromine, — a potent alkaline that makes chocolate unique — and antioxidants with a buttery, cacao flavor. Navitas Organics uses USDA organic, fair trade, non-GMO, vegan, and kosher cacao beans in a pure, cold-pressed oil process. This gluten-free cacao butter is solid at room temperature, but will melt into buttery goodness in your bulletproof coffee! An 8-ounce bag costs $8.67.

SoccerLife says “I’ve started buying this locally now that our co-op carries it, but my original purchase was through Amazon. I live in the south and would NOT order this product in the summer because I’m sure it would melt in transit. However, when I received it in cooler weather, it was in perfect condition. The pieces aren’t uniform at all and it can be a bit of a pain to cut the larger ones, but not a big deal. We love this cocoa butter in our coffee. It doesn’t quite taste as good as it smells, but it’s really awesome and adds a nice bit of nutrition before a workout.”

4. Native Forest Organic Premium Coconut Cream UnsweetenedNative Forest Organic Premium Coconut Cream Unsweetened

Native Forest Organic Premium Coconut Cream Unsweetened

When choosing your coconut-based ingredients, focus on a higher fat and lower sugar content, such as this Native Forest Organic Premium Coconut Cream Unsweetened. Coconut cream is a staple in many Asian-based recipes, yet it’s also a great ingredient for bullet-proof coffee. This product is sustainably farmed, certified organic, kosher, vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO, and has no pesticides. A 5.4-ounce can costs $16.99.

P. Martin says “Native Forest is my favorite brand of coconut milk, and I expected to like the coconut cream, also. And I was right, it’s an excellent product. Many people choose to avoid the gums that keep coconut milk somewhat homogenized, so if that’s a concern for you, this does have guar gum in it. For me personally, I use my coconut milk products cold usually, and having to warm the product to mix it together is something I don’t wish to have to do. There will be a bit of separation–it’s impossible to avoid with coconut milk products–but a quick stir will fix that. It’s also important to note that these are not the same size as the cans of coconut milk; they are about the same size as a can of tomato paste. It does state this in the description. You can get coconut cream by skimming it from the top of a can of coconut milk, but then that leaves the liquid behind for which you need to find a use. I prefer to stick with these little cans when I need only the cream. :)”

I used to be a chocolate addict and these things could be addictive. I used them in a recipe to make peanut butter cups with sugar free chocolate on top. Oh my what a treat that was. These melted right into the peanut butter and helped set up nicely in the fridge. What is nice about these Cocoa Butter wafers is that you do not have to chop them up first. I weighed out what I needed and put in the pan. My next experiment is to try it in my butter coffee. Yum. Yes they are expensive. But getting healthy is priceless. Enjoy!”

Robert Smith says “I have been using this product for years and because of the process they use to make it. It maintains all its the nutritional value that you can not find in many store-bought brands that overheat the product that basically takes away all of it beneficial ingredients. I basically use the product for frying my egg whites and at times I mix it in with my Oatmeal while it is cooking which gives my oatmeal a nice coconut flavor. It can be used on your skin, hair and to swish in your mouth as a mouth was to remove bacteria from around your teeth and mouth. I personally was turned onto the benefits from an article I read about this woman who was a scientist and surgeon and she did years of research trying to find something that would help her husband with Alzheimer’s. she began giving her husband a certain number of tablespoons of it per day to her husband and noticed remarkable results with her husband. If you do research on this Pure organic coconut oil that has been processed the way this company does you will be amazed at how many ways it is good for your body and how many ways it can be used. And no I do not work for this company I am a consumer like yourself. Do your own research and you will find out just what I mean. I highly recommend this product and the company that is selling it because I get it on time and well protected for shipping.”
