Bronx rapper Fat Joe is advocating for healthcare price transparency in the US by lobbying Congress on Capitol Hill. He aims to address the issue of medical debt that affects millions of Americans and raise awareness about the need for clear hospital billing.
Fat Joe, born Joseph Cartagena, sees himself as an evangelist, spreading the word on the importance of transparent hospital pricing, which affects Americans across all backgrounds. He recently visited Capitol Hill and the White House, holding meetings with lawmakers from both political parties, emphasizing that medical debt is a bipartisan issue.
Approximately 100 million Americans are in medical debt, according to Kaiser Health News. Fat Joe partnered with the nonprofit organization Power to the Patients as a spokesperson a year ago, advocating for price transparency in hospitals. This marks his second visit to Capitol Hill on this issue.
Growing up in the South Bronx, Fat Joe understands the struggles of living in poverty and feels an obligation to speak for the voiceless. One in 10 American adults owes medical debt, and medical bills accounted for about 40 percent of personal bankruptcies in 2019, according to the National Institute of Health.
Despite the ongoing rise in healthcare costs, hospitals have been slow to comply with a federal rule requiring them to list the cost of standard procedures. Power to the Patients’ research arm found that over 70 percent of US hospitals reviewed are still not in full compliance.
During a news conference with Fat Joe at the Capitol, Chair of the Hispanic Caucus Nanette Diaz Barragan emphasized that families deserve to know the cost of their health procedures in advance.
Ashley Thompson, senior vice president of public affairs of the American Hospital Association, acknowledged the complexity and lack of clarity in the compliance efforts during a congressional hearing.
Fat Joe’s lobbying efforts coincided with a hearing in the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health. Chairwoman Anna G. Eshoo mentioned that they are considering bipartisan legislation to codify existing price transparency rules for hospitals and insurers.
Fat Joe is optimistic about the bipartisan push to strengthen and enforce the bill and believes that his trip to Capitol Hill may bring about change.
