The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, announced that starting next year, France will offer free mental health care to its citizens.

French health professionals have already made it clear just how vital mental health care is for their people. This is especially true during the pandemic, which has had a severe impact on people’s mental health.

The French government acknowledged the lack of mental health care in recent years, as well as the significant spike in teens attempting suicides, and the fact that 20% of France’s population suffers from depression.

French President Emmanuel Macron said, “We didn’t want to see the importance of mental health, and we got hit in the face with the fact that health is all-encompassing. The consequences of the pandemic are just as tangible in mental health”

Earlier this year, French officials announced free mental care for children and young people, which will now be extended to include everyone who has a doctor’s prescription in 2022.

The pandemic largely brought the issue of mental to a head as isolation, financial worries, and no school brought depression to an ultimate high.

President Macron said,Mental health is a major issue that is insufficiently addressed in our country. The means provided for this issue over the years were not up to the task.”
