We all know the importance of sunscreen in protecting our skin from harmful UV rays. But what if the very product you trust to keep you safe contains ingredients that could harm your health and the environment? There’s growing concern about certain ingredients in sunscreen, primarily due to their potential health risks and environmental impact. According to FDA research, eight of these ingredients to avoid are Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, Cinoxate, Dioxybenzone, and Ensulizole.

The skin often readily absorbs these chemicals and can enter the bloodstream, leading to several potential health problems. For example, Oxybenzone has been linked to hormonal imbalance, reproductive harm, skin reactions, and photoallergies. Similarly, Octinoxate and Avobenzone are associated with hormone-like activity and thyroid alterations. Besides, these chemicals can significantly damage aquatic ecosystems when they find their way into water bodies.

Let’s take a closer look at these.

  1. Oxybenzone: According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 97% of people have traces of oxybenzone in their bodies. This common sunscreen ingredient is absorbed through the skin and can disrupt hormonal balance, affect sperm development, and may even be linked to breast cancer. Moreover, oxybenzone is toxic to coral reefs and aquatic life.
  2. Octinoxate: This UV filter is rapidly absorbed into the skin and has been found in mothers’ milk. Research suggests that octinoxate can disrupt hormone activity and alter thyroid function.
  3. Avobenzone: Commonly found in many sunscreens, avobenzone can break down in sunlight, reducing its efficacy and making your skin more vulnerable to UV rays.
  4. Homosalate: This ingredient absorbs UV rays but is considered unsafe in concentrations above 10% by the European Commission. Despite this, the FDA currently allows a concentration of 15%.
  5. Octocrylene: Often used to neutralize UV rays, octocrylene can break down into benzophenone, a chemical linked to cancer risk.
  6. Cinoxate: While it does prevent other sunscreen ingredients from breaking down and absorbs UV rays, more research is needed to fully understand its potential side effects.
  7. Dioxybenzone: Also known as Benzophenone-8, this ingredient absorbs UV rays but can disrupt endocrine production.
  8. Ensulizole: Exposure to sunlight can cause this ingredient to produce free radicals, leading to DNA damage and other health issues.

What is the difference between Chemical vs. Mineral Sunscreens?

Chemical sunscreens, which contain some or all of the above ingredients, work by absorbing UV rays and converting them to heat. On the other hand, mineral sunscreens, which contain ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, sit on top of the skin and refract UV rays. They’re also less likely to cause allergic reactions and are generally considered safer for both your health and the environment.

So, what’s the alternative?

Mineral sunscreens with active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide offer a safer choice. These naturally occurring minerals are gentle on the skin, effectively block UVA and UVB rays, and are less likely to cause allergic reactions. Moreover, they are non-comedogenic, meaning they won’t clog your pores.

Moreover, eco-friendly and cruelty-free sunscreens are an excellent choice for your health and the environment. Many brands offer a range of products that exclude harmful chemicals while providing effective sun protection! Including mineral sunscreens, which only contain zinc oxide and titanium oxide, are also reef-safe, meaning they do not harm aquatic life.

To choose the right sunscreen, read labels carefully and avoid products containing the eight ingredients listed above. Check for a broad-spectrum claim, SPF of 30 or higher, and water resistance, and verify that it is eco-friendly and cruelty-free.

While sun protection is crucial, ensuring your products are safe for you and the environment is equally important. Choosing a sunscreen free from harmful chemicals and safe, natural ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide is a step in the right direction. After all, protecting your skin shouldn’t come at the cost of your overall health or the well-being of our planet.
