Imagine stepping out into your backyard, expecting to see a lush, green lawn, and instead finding a patchy dirt wasteland. This was the shocking reality for one couple as featured in a TikTok video by @charleymaryy, which has attracted over 7.8 million views. The culprit? Leatherjackets—larvae of crane flies notorious for munching on the roots of grass and plants. These pests are especially prevalent in the UK following wet autumns, thriving in damp conditions.
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) notes that while there are about 350 species of leatherjackets in Britain, only a few cause significant garden damage. Unfortunately for home gardeners, there are no pesticides approved for combating these larvae. The RHS suggests using pathogenic nematodes, a biological control, which infects the leatherjackets with a bacterial disease. However, timing is critical as colder soils can render the treatment ineffective.
