Feng Shui is the “practice of looking at our living spaces and working environment and striking a balance with the natural world.” The core of Feng Shui is rooted in the philosophy of Tao — the practice of Taoism — “which translates to mean ‘the way,'” generally in reference to nature. Put all the pieces together and you’ll learn that “all the basic principles of Feng shui reflect nature,” connecting human life with the flow of our environment.

There are a few essential principles to truly make a space Feng Shui.

First, is the commanding position, referring to the “spot in a room that is the furthest from the door and not in direct line with it,” but rather a diagonal to and within “clear line of sight of” the door. Second, is the bagua, a “feng shui energy map superimposed on the floor plan of your home” made up of “eight areas [that relate] to a different life circumstance.” And, third, are the five elements — “earth, metal, water, wood, and fire” and refer to “interrelated phases in life that work together to create a complete system.”

If you achieve a properly Feng Shui’d home, you’re essentially improving upon the chi of your household. What in the world is chi? Chi refers to “‘vital fluids and the energy itself that flows through our bodies.” It essentially makes up energy and comprises “a balance of Yin and Yang, positive and negative, electromagnetic energy.”
