Palitana, a small city in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district, is the first city in the world to officially ban non-vegetarian food. Known as a major Jain pilgrimage destination, this historic decision reflects the city’s dedication to the Jain philosophy of non-violence (ahimsa) and compassion for all living beings.
The shift came after a significant protest by over 200 Jain monks, who urged the closure of around 250 butcher shops in the area. In response, the government enacted a law prohibiting the killing of animals for food, as well as the sale of meat and eggs within the city. This move aligns with the community’s deeply rooted values, emphasizing ethics and peaceful living.
Since the ban, Palitana has flourished as a vegetarian hub. Local restaurants now cater to an entirely vegetarian clientele, offering a wide range of flavorful dishes that highlight the diversity of plant-based cuisine. This culinary transformation has further elevated Palitana’s reputation as a destination for those seeking not only spiritual fulfillment but also a vibrant, ethical food culture.
Home to the awe-inspiring Shatrunjaya Hill temples, Palitana attracts pilgrims and tourists from around the globe. The city’s commitment to non-violence enhances its spiritual atmosphere, making it a haven for Jain followers and a growing number of vegetarian-friendly travelers.
