Steeping slices of lemon in hot (or cold) water, just as you would a tea bag, makes for a delicious and healthful brew to sip on in the mornings.

If nothing else, adding lemon to your water is a great way to flavor water and make it more palatable to those who don’t really like to drink plain water. We all need to stay hydrated! Setting yourself up with a belly full of water first thing is a good start to the day.

Lemon water is also thought to help get your digestive juices flowing, so it is a good tea to drink even before you have had breakfast. What’s more, it’s a great breath freshener! Who doesn’t need that first thing?

2. Sage Tea

Sage is most associated with savory dishes such as soups, stews, and stuffing! But it actually makes a really good herbal tea. You can use whole sage leaves or rubbed sage that acts just like loose tea would.

Sage has some wonderful health benefits that can promote a great start to the day. Sage is thought to be beneficial to oral health. It has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that promote gum health and, once again, fresh breath.

Some studies suggest that sage may help to improve mood, focus, and brain function—all attributes that can help set you up for a great day ahead.

3. Peppermint Tea

Peppermint tea is wonderfully aromatic and zingy. A cup of peppermint tea is a great way to awaken the senses and offer some health benefits at the same time.

Having a cup of peppermint tea in the morning may help to energize you and reduce feelings of daytime fatigue. Peppermint oil also has links to helping improve memory, concentration, and alertness and may help with your focus for the day ahead.

And, for that morning breath? Peppermint is another tea that can help freshen your breath due to its antibacterial properties.

4. Turmeric Tea

By steeping dried fresh turmeric root in hot water, you can make yourself a cup of deeply yellow and rich morning tea. In reality, the most health benefits come from taking curcumin, the beneficial compound in turmeric, in supplement form as a cup of turmeric tea could not provide you with a high enough dosage to have a huge impact.

That said, turmeric tea is healthy and nutritious and makes a great morning tea that may even help to elevate your mood and prepare you for the day ahead.

5. Rooibos Tea

Popular in Southern Africa and gaining popularity around the world, rooibos tea makes a great alternative to otherwise caffeinated black or green tea. The nice thing about drinking this tea is that it can be consumed in a similar way to black tea, with a splash of plant-based milk adding flavor and comfort. This makes it a great alternative to that caffeinated cuppa in the morning.

This tea is high in antioxidants and, unlike its green and black tea friends, is low in tannins and oxalic acid.

No one is saying to ditch the coffee, but if you are looking to reduce your caffeine intake, there are plenty of delicious, nutritious, and healthful alternatives that can still give you a satisfying cup in the morning.
