In an unexpected twist on established assumptions about heat vulnerability, a recent study published in Science Advances has found that young adults in Mexico suffer significantly more temperature-related deaths than their elderly counterparts. Contrary to long-held beliefs that the elderly are the most at risk during heatwaves, the research, covering deaths from 1998 to 2019, shows that individuals under 35 are experiencing a higher mortality rate due to extreme heat conditions.

Traditionally, health and weather advisories have highlighted the elderly and young children as the groups most vulnerable to heat-related complications. However, this study shows that when temperature and humidity combine to hit levels like the mid to upper 80s Fahrenheit (about 30°C) with 50% relative humidity, young adults see a disproportionate impact. Specifically, the study documented that for every single temperature-related death of a person aged 50 and older, there were nearly 32 deaths among those aged 35 and younger.
The findings are particularly stark for the 18-35 age group, which witnessed nine times as many heat-related fatalities compared to those over 50. Experts are now examining why this age group, typically perceived as robust, is falling victim to heat at such alarming rates. Two primary theories have emerged: the prevalence of young adults in outdoor occupations where heat escape is limited, and a potential underestimation of personal vulnerability among the youth.
Jeffrey Shrader, a climate economist at Columbia University and co-author of the study, noted that as global temperatures continue to rise due to Climate change, younger populations may increasingly bear the brunt of heat-related deaths, shifting the demographic profile of those most at risk.
The research team employed complex statistical methods to isolate the impact of temperature from other variables, revealing that younger adults have a ‘sweet spot’ for temperature that is about nine degrees Fahrenheit cooler than that for older adults. This study not only challenges existing perceptions about who is most at risk from heat but also highlights the urgent need for targeted public health strategies that encompass the vulnerabilities of younger adults in warming climates.
