In partnership with local community groups, Johns Hopkins University scientists are leading a ground-breaking project to map temperature variations across Baltimore. Spearheaded by climate scientist Ben Zaitchik from the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, the initiative involves cycling through the city to capture data on how different neighborhoods endure varying heat levels.

During a particularly sweltering day in late August, Zaitchik and his assistant embarked on a 17-mile bicycle journey equipped with a sophisticated temperature-recording device. Their route was meticulously planned to include areas with sparse tree cover and those lush with greenery to compare how vegetation impacts urban temperatures.
This endeavor is part of a larger, five-year, $25 million Baltimore Social-Environmental Collaborative (BSEC) project funded by a substantial U.S. Department of Energy grant. The project aims to develop comprehensive climate adaptation strategies that can serve as a model for cities nationwide, focusing on mitigating the urban heat island effect that plagues many metropolitan areas.
The BSEC project draws on the expertise of researchers from several institutions, including Pennsylvania State University and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Together, they are installing weather instruments across Baltimore to gather precise climate data, focusing on neighborhoods that historically lack sufficient green spaces.
These efforts are complemented by community engagement. Zaitchik and his team work closely with local groups to integrate scientific inquiry with public health and urban planning. The project also emphasizes the importance of green, pedestrian-friendly designs and aims to empower communities by making the collected data accessible for local decision-making.
As urban areas continue to grow, projects like BSEC are crucial in understanding and combating the adverse effects of climate change.
